Industrial water users facing space constraints and rising maintenance budgets have a new ally. MetFlow Systems today officially launched its next-generation Vertical Woltmann Water Meter, a DN 50–200 mm bulk-flow instrument that combines the classic Woltmann helical-impeller principle with a patented guide-type, removable measuring cartridge. Early field trials in Spain, California and South Africa show the unit delivering Class B (R 160) accuracy while reducing total cost of ownership by nearly one-third compared with conventional horizontal Woltmann designs.
“Traditional Woltmann meters are accurate and robust, but they are also bulky and expensive to service,” said Dr. Li-Wei Chen, MetFlow’s Chief Technology Officer. “By rotating the turbine axis to a vertical position and engineering a dry-dial, magnetic-drive cartridge that slides straight out of the pipeline, we have eliminated the need to break flanges or lift the meter body for routine inspection. A two-person crew can swap a cartridge in under eight minutes, so downtime drops from hours to minutes.”
The vertical configuration slashes installation footprint by 45 %, allowing the meter to fit inside crowded plant rooms or narrow irrigation galleries where horizontal models simply will not fit. Despite the smaller envelope, the unit maintains the hallmark Woltmann advantages: very low head loss (ΔP 63), overload flow rates up to 500 m³/h on the DN 200 version, and a starting flow as low as 0.25 m³/h on the DN 50 model. An epoxy-coated cast-iron body and stainless-steel strainer protect the mechanism in raw-water or mildly corrosive environments, while an optional 316 L stainless body is available for desalination plants and chemical facilities.
Accuracy is guaranteed across a 160:1 dynamic range, meeting ISO 4064 and OIML R49. The dry-dial register is vacuum-sealed to prevent fogging and can rotate 360 ° for effortless reading at any angle. For utilities embracing smart water networks, MetFlow offers factory-integrated pulse, RS-485 Modbus, LoRa or NB-IoT modules that transmit consumption data every 15 minutes. The electronics package is IP 68 rated and draws less than 0.1 mA, enabling a 10-year battery life.
Pilot deployments underscore the business case. At the Port of Valencia, 42 units installed on cooling-water circuits cut annual maintenance hours by 220 and reduced unaccounted water by 18 %. Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town retrofitted 120 agricultural bulk meters with the vertical design, saving an estimated USD 190,000 in crane and excavation costs during the first service cycle.
Environmental credentials are equally strong. The removable cartridge extends service life to 12 years—double the regional average—reducing scrap metal and carbon footprint. All wetted parts are lead-free, and the packaging is 100 % recyclable cardboard.
Shipments begin August 15, with list prices starting at USD 385 for the DN 50 cold-water version and scaling to USD 1,240 for the DN 200 hot-water variant. Utilities and EPC contractors can request free evaluation kits through MetFlow’s global distributor network.
